Istanbul Airport to Taksim Square — Metro, Havaist shuttle and taxi 2026

Taksim Square is the heart of European Istanbul — and one of the most common destinations from Istanbul Airport (IST). The distance is roughly 48 kilometres, and you have three practical options: the M11 + M2 metro, the Havaist HVL-9 direct shuttle, or a taxi.

All fares are current as of April 2026. Journey times assume normal daytime traffic.

Quick Comparison

OptionPriceJourney TimeTransfers
Metro M11 + M2~80–100 TRY~50–55 min1 (Gayrettepe)
Havaist HVL-9426 TRY~80 minNone
Taxi (orange)~2,200–2,400 TRY~45–60 minNone

Option 1 — Metro: M11 to Gayrettepe, then M2 to Taksim

This is the cheapest route and avoids traffic entirely. The full journey takes around 50–55 minutes with the transfer.

Step-by-Step

  1. From the arrivals hall, follow signs to the M11 Metro (underground, Level -2).
  2. Purchase or top up your İstanbulkart at the yellow vending machines (card: 70 TRY, works on all Istanbul transport).
  3. Board any M11 train towards Gayrettepe — all trains on this line run to Gayrettepe, so there's no risk of boarding the wrong direction.
  4. Ride M11 for approximately 35 minutes to Gayrettepe terminus.
  5. At Gayrettepe, follow signs to the M2 metro (same station complex, no street exit needed).
  6. Board M2 towards Hacıosman or Mahmutbey — Taksim is 4 stops from Gayrettepe (Şişli/Mecidiyeköy → Osmanbey → Taksim).
  7. Alight at Taksim station. The exit for Taksim Square is directly above the station.

Fares

The M11 charges 38.49 TRY with İstanbulkart (turnstile deducts 66.54 TRY and refunds the difference when you tap out). The M2 charges the standard Istanbul metro flat fare of approximately 42 TRY with İstanbulkart. Total cost: around 80 TRY.

M11 operating hours: 06:00–00:00. If you arrive after midnight, the metro is not running.

Option 2 — Havaist HVL-9 Direct Shuttle to Taksim (Recommended)

The Havaist HVL-9 is the easiest option for most travellers — a direct, air-conditioned coach from the airport to Taksim Square with no transfers. The bus drops you at Point Hotel on Taksim Square, right in the center of the action.

Fare: 426 TRY per person
Journey time: ~80 minutes in normal traffic
Frequency: Every 30 minutes during peak hours; every 60 minutes overnight
Operates: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Where to Board

Exit the arrivals hall and walk to the Ground Floor Bus Terminal — there are clear Havaist signs throughout the terminal. Buy your ticket at the Havaist desk inside the terminal or pay the driver directly by card or cash. No advance booking required.

What to Expect Onboard

Havaist coaches are full-size 46-seat coaches with Wi-Fi, USB charging, air conditioning and luggage storage in the hold. Standing is not permitted. The bus makes a few intermediate stops (including Zincirlikuyu and Beşiktaş) before reaching Taksim.

Taksim Drop-Off Point

The bus stops in front of Point Hotel on the north side of Taksim Square — a 2-minute walk from İstiklal Avenue and all the main Taksim hotels. The Taksim M2 metro station is 200 metres away if you need to continue by metro.

Option 3 — Taxi

A taxi from Istanbul Airport to Taksim takes around 45–60 minutes in normal traffic, though the journey can take over 90 minutes during morning or evening rush hours. The airport is 48 kilometres from Taksim and the motorway is involved, which means toll charges on top of the meter.

Estimated fare (orange taxi): 2,200–2,400 TRY including motorway tolls
No night surcharge applies at Istanbul Airport — the meter runs at the same rate day and night.

Use the official taxi rank outside arrivals (clearly signposted). Do not follow anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a taxi — only regulated vehicles use the official rank.

Tips for the Journey

  • Rush hours to avoid: 07:30–09:30 and 17:00–20:00, Monday to Friday. Both metro and taxi are slower during these windows; Havaist is less affected as it uses dedicated sections of the E-80 motorway.
  • Luggage: If you have large bags, the M11 + M2 combination requires navigating escalators and a platform transfer at Gayrettepe. Havaist is more convenient for heavy luggage.
  • Night arrivals: Havaist HVL-9 runs overnight, making it the easiest option for flights landing after midnight.
  • From Taksim onwards: The Taksim M2 station connects further to Şişhane (for Galata/Karaköy), Haliç and Yenikapı where you can switch to Marmaray for the Asian side.
